Hi guys. I had my 15 year old jbweld patch job on an old air compressor start to leak again on an end cap towards the bottom. So I grinded off the jb weld and got down to bare metal.
Plugged in the 110 mig welder with my brand new harbor freight/chicago electric welding helmet I got at the parking lot sale for half price at $35. Good news is that the helmet worked great and the old one may go into the collection of "saved but never to be used and too costly to throw away" stuff. Quite a large collection actually.
Anyway I practiced on the compressor bracket a little. Then began trying to weld the little hole. Too hot and burned a much larger hole until I was back to good metal. Turned the heat down one notch from maximum and worked around the edge of the hole a little at a time and filled it all in.
Still have a couple places it is leaking through the weld in the middle.
Problem I have is that it doesn't seem to want to lay down a bead. It just melts the wire and gobs weld on. While welding when it is red hot, it looks good but after I stop, then I see the round gobs of weld.
I know the tank is thin metal and maybe I am still too hot. I may grind it back off and try a piece of metal backer if I can get a good bead on it. Maybe I should just build it up a little at a time.
Any thoughts on this?
I know the safety and explosion issues. This old compressor sits out in the barn and is empty except once in a great while we air up tires. It doesn't build any pressure above 40-50. It has worked all these years with the jbweld which just came loose.
