In my opinion these tanks are cheap! Compared to what could happen. I'd buy a new one in a New York second before repairing the 80-gallon tank I have. Look at it this way, if the tank is leaking who's to say the tank isn't rotten through out, where is the good material to work with? Sure weld a patch, how big? Again where does the rotten / rusted material stop and the good material start?
Push come to shove, no other way out of it, I'd patch a tank, done a lot worse in my time! But I pick my battles, an old rusted out air compressor tank is not one I'd tackle, and I sure wouldn't use Flux Core! I've run tons of flux core in my time, it has it's place, but not on a repair like this! I'd Tig weld it my self. But again, air compressor tanks are cheap!
FYI, always use a round, or oval patch, never use a patch with square corners!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
