A friend almost got killed years ago when a feed water heater blew the manway cover off. It was supposed to be "cleared" and safe.
There were still four 1-1/4" 8 tpi B7 studs at 90º holding the 4" thick steel cover plate. It stripped them and would have killed Wayne if the cover hadn't been caught by the come-a -long. The 1/4" thick welded inner diaphragm held.
It was later determined that the drain/vent valve was stopped up and the tank had *3 psi* on it.
Buying a new tank will be a LOT cheaper than your widow paying for your funeral.
