Can a 3-pt drawbar pull anything?

I've got an Oliver S55 with a 3 pt, and I recently
decided to haul an old wagon around with the
drawbar I got with it. I've only got one stabilizer
bar, so I started looking to make / buy one. Now people have come out of the woodwork
to tell me I can't pull anything with that setup!
They all claim if I can't bolt a bar to the bottom
of my tractor I'll just wind up breaking
something. Is this true? Is the 3-pt
drawbar really worthless?! Thanks for your help!
