I was taught to open up a hay field by driving along the fence the first round and then continue in circles to the center, then do the back cut around the outside of the field. This gave time for any mashed down grass to spring back up and if you hit a post in the grass or did some other dumb thing you would have the majority of the field cut. Seems to make sense. I thought everyone did it that way, but saw a kid cut the outside first the other night. He also thought he had to go 7 or 8 mph with an old JD haybine....the field showed it the next day LOL!
