50 years ago when I was growing up we raked the hay as soon as it was cut. So we cut a couple rounds clockwise, then went back and cut the back swath so that the other guy could start raking.
After we got the baler with the thrower on it we would cut around the field several times to open it up, then cut the rest open ended. That way when the baler got to the end of the field we could shut the baler off and drive empty around the ends. Didn't have to worry about turning so many corners and missing the wagon with the bale thrower. Also easier to rake that way.
