With a side pull mower/ haynine/ discbine, I would cut 5 rounds, then do the back cut. So after I had 6 outside rounds cut , I will the strike out the field into lands, and cut in straight rows, no more round and round. Now I cut with my 12 foot JD swather, and I just make 3-4 passes across the end of the field. Then drive , while cutting, to the far side , and cut 3-4 passes of the head land on that end. I then go to the longest straightest side, and just go up and down, cutting my way across the field. Works great on irregular shaped fields, and no time wasted driving empty across the ends. And no ragged corners of in cut hay. I have cut with everything, and the swather is what I like best.
