Alternator Question

I rewired my tractor for 12v and used a rebuilt GM 3 wire alternator. One terminal lug runs to the battery. One spade terminal I wired to the ignition switch, so it only is hot when the ignition is on. The remaining spade terminal I used a short wire to jumper over to the battery terminal. My problem is that with the short jumper wire left on for a few days the battery will drain down. What can I do to fix this? By the way if I switch the two spade terminals around the engine won't shut off so I don't think that is an option. Thanks, Rick
