You have the two wires in the regulator plug reversed. If you look at the alternator case by the regulator plug, you will see that the wires are marked #1 and#2 The #2 wire should be attached to the BAT lug on the alt rear. The #1 wire must go to the ign switch so it is only powered when the switch is on,or it will run down the battery. If you do not put a diode or resistor( an idiot light is also a resistor) in the #1 wire,power from the alternator #1 wire will backflow to the ign coil and keep the tractor running. A diode allows power to flow from the ign switch to the alt #1 wire to excite it, but prevents a backflow from the alt to the ign coil. A resistor or idiot light does not prevent the backflow to the coil, but restricts it to a low enough level that it will not power the ign system. Two ways of arriving at the same end.
