fuel efficiency technology

Hello Everyone, Just finished reading the "gas prices"
comments below and wondered what ever
happened to all of that technology that
was developed as a result of the last
oil crisis in the 70's? I remember the
development of a special carb that supposedly
improved an eight cylinder engines efficiency
5 to 7 times. I do not remember the details,
but it seems nothing more was discussed once
the auto industry got its hands on it. Can anyone remind me of some of these "lost"
innovations? Or, was it just a bunch of
propaganda? Thanks
