The Auto companies have very inept management. And because of this they are unable or unwilling to supply the market with a car that gives 50+ MPG. There are many technoligies that would make this number possible. 1. Teflon or graphite impregnated cylinder wall inserts. 2. 6 speed transmissions. 3. 4-6-8 technology or variable valve timing. 4. fuel cell technology, still along way from this. 5. Aluminum cars instead of steel, steel weighs 2.8 times that of aluminum. In my opinion as long as gasoline is under $2 a gallon the auto companies are not going to do much, just come out with snazzy gadgets to wow the consumer. I do believe that Diesel engines, engineered correctly will give very good gas mileage, better than gasoline engines...especially in small cars. Oh well just venting steam.
