Tim I believe the there were some exaggerated claims/rumors made about the 100 mpg carburators, etc. However with that said I do feel that the auto and oil industries have not pursued the higher mileage options because the goverment has not required it and becuase it costs money they will go no farther in that direction than they have to. There are examples in our past history of collusion in industry to increase sales that were not in the best interests of the public. ie Los Angeles used to have a lot of cable/streetcar types of mass transit. At least one tire company and one auto company paired up and bought out the mass transit companies and shut them down so people would buy more cars and tires. So I do not say that it is impossible that the auto and oil companies are not playing some of the same type of tricks now-a-days.
