ALWAYS GET A RECIEPT!!!

Posted by david on July 16, 2002 at 11:03:51 from (63.165.10.205):

I've recently made a deal to trade a tractor for
another tractor. On my part of the trade I'm
delivering a tractor to Iowa from Texas. I've had
a 16' bumper pull trailer that I bought from a
so-called " buddy " for about a year now. I bought
the trailer for $150.oo. It was in rough shape,
pretty much just a frame and axles. The thing I
liked about it was that it had a heavy frame, just
like the $1800.oo trailer that tractor supply
sells as a car hauler except it had a rotten wood
deck. Over the last year I've pretty much
reconstructed this trailer and have about $600.oo
into it now, along with some great fenders made
out of 10" junior channel that a fella gave me the
idea about on a tractor talk forum. I got the
trailer finished and was planning a trip to Iowa
this friday. Yesterday i went down to get it
registered along with the serial # I had found for
the first time this past weekend when I was
painting the trailer. It is a stolen trailer!
OOOUUCCHH. My heart sank to my boots! I paid the
$2.oo to have a title search on it and found (with
the use of the internet) the owner. I contacted
the owner and explained that I had just sank
$600.oo into his trailer. I had bought the trailer
from this guy who swears he didn't know it was
stolen and now I'm having trouble contacting him
since the first phone call. I have no reciept and
I'm now waiting for the worst. Fellas what I'm
trying to say is, that when you buy anything with
wheels get a reciept and cover your but. I hope
this helps someone. I told the owner that I will
do whatever he wants as far as if he wants the
trailer back or some sort of payment for the
title. As far as my ol' buddy I bought this thing
from, I'm not so much mad rather than discouraged.
Sometimes these types of "litmous test" are needed
to find out who your standing with. Apparently my
judge of character is not what I thought it
was.
