In most places, having a receipt wouldn't make much difference as far as your status in the whole deal. All it would prove is that you bought a stolen trailer and it wouldn't mean that the trailer is yours. It would still belong to the original owner. It's almost like buying a car and then some bank comes calling when the previous owner stops paying the monthly tab, unfortunately you're on the hook even though you bought it legally. Once you return it, you'd have to go after the fella that sold it to you to recoup your losses I guess, that is if you could find him (or if it was worth doing via the court route).
