I bought a horse trailer from a co-worker a few years ago. It was never registered (therefore never titled), they just swapped license plates around from other trailers. I went to the Dept of Motor Vehicles to register it but the clerk said "no way!" I had the original 'certificate of origin' from the dealer but it had been altered, the first owner erased her husband's name and typed hers in (something about a divorce case...). I ended up having to do a title search, and then had to post a 2 year surety bond for 1.5 times the value of the trailer, just in case someone came forward claiming to own the trailer! I finally got it registered, and then to top it all off, the @*#&@! horse refused to get on it!!! Ended up selling it a few months later. Live and learn! Always check your documentation!!
