Metal shavings in tranmission fluid considered normal for JD 4000 TEN SERIES

Just wanted to let everybody know that John Deere considers metal shavings in the transmission fluid/filter normal in this line of tractors. I bought a 4010 compact utility tractor in the fall. I just did the scheduled service after the recommended 50 hours and found metal shavings in the fluid and filter. The shavings are obviously from when the transmission housing was machined not the normal metallic dust from breakin. I find it amusing that the owners' manual warns in bold letters four different locations to clean the dipstick, fill valve and filter cover before removing because any contamination could cause sever damage. I guess they don't think metal will cause as much damage as dirt. Evidently John Deere draws the line of flushing the housing at the 5000 series tractors. I got the same response from several dealers who do service on compact tractors. They said this was normal. I also called John Deere direct and got a similar response. However I got a different response when talking to a dealer who services 5000 series tractors and larger equipment. He said that all the transmissions that they service are flushed at the factory and if they found shavings in the transmission they would flush the system at the least. I guess John Deere thinks you need to spend $25,000 or more to get this type of quality and service. It is a shame that they are selling throwaway tractors using the John Deere name, which used to stand for quality. So if you are planning on buying a John Deere compact tractor you might want to reconsider.
