Tractor Hauling - Utility Trailer GVRW Question

[ View Follow Ups ] [ Post Followup ] [ Return to Forum ]

Posted by Dodge on February 26, 2003 at 17:13:10 from (63.70.164.200):

Hi guys, say hope this does not come across as a stupid question, but here is my concern. I have a friend that would like me to haul a tractor that weighs 5000 pounds, about 200 miles on my trailer.

My trailer is a utility trailer with a wood floor. It seems built pretty well, but I would not consider it heavy duty, it is tandem axle with 3500 pound axles.
The specs on my trailer say the GVWR is 5000 pounds. I called the place were I purchased the trailer and the guy said the trailer would haul a tractor weighing 5000 pounds with no problem.
I always thought the GVWR was the maximum weight the trailer could haul, but this includes the weight of the trailer itself which is 1, 150 pounds. So I'm thinking all I should really haul is nothing over 4000 pounds??? I really do think the trailer will haul the tractor with no problems, and I would like to use it, but just wanted to get some other opinions on it. See if maybe some others have hauled tractors of this weight on lighter built utility trailers. I have seen tractors weighing 3,500 pounds on utility trailers with single axles,, so I don't know, maybe I worry too much. Thanks in advance, to help give me a little more insight one way or the other. Dodge
