thats only true if you are running a bussiness i have been told by the dmv. i have a ford L600, (24,000 gvw) and they told me that i only needed a dot number if i was hauling for hire or operating a bussiness,if not i had to post NOT FOR HIRE on the truck, i did that and have never had a problem, i dont go outa state much tho. you should be able to see the words accross the bottom of the door in the pic of my truck
