The way farmers are not exempt is if they are running a straight commercial tag. Here in NC, if you have farm tags, you are exempt from a few laws, such as you don't have to have signs on your truck telling the owner's name and location. About 2 years ago, the law stated that all trucks over 10,000 GVWR had to have signs. They wrote tickets right and left. Everyone bought signs, including myself. Not 6 mo's later, the state congress changed that law making trucks with farm tags exempt. As far as the commercial numbers, our truck is tagged for 25,000 lbs and I have been pulled by the DMV twice. For neither stop did he mention DOT numbers. The thing yall might be thinking about is your license. Here in NC, if your trailer is rated for over 10,001 lbs, you must have a higher class license...learned that the hard way, even with farm tags...maybe 1 out of 100 has the right license...doesn't make much sense because it has nothing to do with actual weight, just the rating...
