Trailer manufactures have quite a bit of latitude to reduce the weight rating of their trailers. You in fact may have a 7,000# trailer the has been down rated to 5,000#. Re-rating your trailer could simply as filling out some paperwork and having your trailer inspected. Most manufactures build to a price point so the brakes, hubs, wheels, springs and tires on your trailer have probably been downgraded to the 5,000# mark. My trailer for example has two 6,ooo axles and was built as a12,000 trailer in every way except for the four wheels and tires that are rated at 2,500# each. This makes my trailer a 10,000# trailer. With outgoing through the required inspections and paperwork to increase the capacity on your trailer I would not load it past the 5,000 mark. 5,000 is what the LEGAL and known safe capicity of your trailer. The fines are steep and you could kill someone. The biggest problem with pulling an overloaded trailer is stopping. Finding out you can't stop when your doing 50 mph is something I wouldn't want to find out. Also, can your pulling vehicle handle the extra weight and how about the driver?
