my gates are gone

my attorny told me to close my gates on my land(its declared open space)and block all road ways, so I did it. well yesterday the city mayor, the sheriff and some property owners next to us came in with a tractor and tore down my fence. the sheriff said he will do nothing about the people that destroyed my fence, because it is a sevale mater.is this legal are not? I allways thought that you had t go threw with what is dew process.
