Does the US military use metric ???

Somewhat off topic but who else would I ask and get a good answer? I was watching a video that had the US National Guard in Louisiana (called Southern Comfort ... pretty good movie). Anyways, there were references to distances and the soldiers used 'kilometers' and 'meters'. We're used to that up here but somehow in the US movie it suprised me. Does the military down there use metric, even on their own home turf? How about in schools, any metric used much anywhere?
