Mike, in the flying business (USAF) both are used. In the U.S. Navy, neither are used (Ha! Just kidding!) Flight data publications for aircraft performance, runway parameters, meteorlogical data, etc are published in english units (pounds, feet, etc) in the states and for our foreign bases. In Europe and other areas, metric units are used. We carried conversion tables in our flight documents to ensure accuracy. For tactical fighters operating in close support of U.S. and NATO ground troops, metric units are used, since that's what they are using on the ground. For example, a FAC (Forward Air Controller) might advise that the target they want destroyed is 2 "clicks" north of their smoke marker. However, a lot of that is being replaced by precision location devices using coordinates....now, to get the coordinates correctly.....??????
