Ahhh.. dear sweet Metric. Home of the meter or should I say metre. I am a science teacher in Illinois and in my classes as in many other classes, we teach metric measurements. I don't teach conversion, just straight use of metric. Sort of like teaching a foreign language and not expecting translation, just conversation. When you are good, you don't translate. Anyhow, metric has been used in this country for years. Think about sparkplugs. The U.S. has used metric for money for as long as I have been around. As for me, either system is fine but to be a world class country, metric is probably the way to go. I often ask my students if they know the American system of measurements. When they think they do I ask them about measuements such as the bushel, peck, chain, link, furlong etc. When they consider these, metric looks even easier.
