BATTERY in H 6v?

hey guys I took the bat out of my 42 H and its a 8 volt what up with that? I thought it was suposed to be a 6v witch one is it and witch one will work? this one is bad I took it out and charged it and left it set 2-3 days and it was dead again the farm & fleet has one for around 35.00 I think its the cheap way to go and i can keep it orignal that way...thanks sHan....
