mowing techniques

This may sound like a pretty obvious, trivial issue, but it strikes me that there may be many techniques for mowing a large area with a tractor. I have a Ford 650 and a bush hog. Speficially, I am talking about an irregular area, where a linear back and forth approach is impractical. I tend to do a big spiral, avoiding "details" as much as possible. This all works fine, but when I have to go around a corner that is tighter than the turning radius of the tractor, I overshoot it, then come back in and undercut it. This evolves into a big "lobe". At times, to avoid this, I'll round off the corner to a gradual curve so I can get the bulk cut. Then, I'll go back and finish the cut-off corners (is this where the phrase "cutting corners" comes from). When it gets down to a small, wierd shape in the center of the lawn, that has corners that I cannot negotiate, I'll cut straght past the corner, then do a 270 degree turn to approach the next side. This seems easier than backing up and doing a Y turn. This is actually a large lawn, so I like to keep the mowing pattern as regular as possible. I'm just curious if anybody has any words of wisdom on this subject.
