BUDA, IL. A rural carrier died Thursday when she collided with a farm tractor about 2 miles east of Buda on the Buda blacktop.

I am also a rural mail carrier, and farmer. Before I even knew about this tragedy, I was going up to move a few more round bales and was thinking about how high I should carry the bale spears with no bale. People just don't seem to pay attention, even though I have DOT tape on the 1066, high and low, and on the axle stubs, along with the new SMV.
I will try to get to the shoulder if there is one, and see someone coming up way too fast. But don't always have that option. My thoughts on the bale spear are to carry it low when empty. I am afraid if someone does hit me, and the spear is high, it will run across their hood, probably roll my tractor, and kill them.
If I carry it low, I think maybe it will end up stuck in their engine. Their airbags would pop, and I would take one heck of a push, but with a 3 to 1 weight advantage should come out OK. DOUG
