12 volt conversion - DIODE needed ???

I read the 12 volt conversion article on the new YT homepage this month (by Bob Melville) and it's certainly an easy-to-follow writeup with a good diagram. Do I remember reading or hearing that somehow you are supposed to wire in a diode in one of the alternator lines? Something to do with the fact that the tractor can keep running after you switch it off if you don't have it? Or am I confusing this with something else? And if it should be there, what direction does it face and where do you install it?
