Bought a NH 479 haybine from an elderly couple I know yesterday. They bought it new in May of 76'. Kept it in the shed every night of its life and hasn't been used in over ten years. It's in real good shape and shows very little wear. Problem is it has standard guards. I personally have never used anything with standard guards, only stub guards. Everybody tells me standard guards are worth a darn, gots to have stub guards! The old fella that owned said he always got along just fine. Now, being I am pretty jewish when it comes to the checkbook, I get to thinking, maybe I should just put new knives on it and try it with the old guards? Or will I cuss it every step of the way? Maybe I should just break down and get all new guards and hold downs and everything, just costs so dang much. Advice???
