I bought a 479 haybine last summer that had been shedded for at least that long. I sprayed the cutter bar down with lube, and have cut about 7 acres. Mine had the long stub guards, maybe the short guards are better in your area. I have no complaints with the long, but I am also cutting grasses only. Try them, and see before you change them. Maybe you can get by with the thing as it is.
