The 479 is a fine machine. Check to see if the guards are worn out (rounded off where the knife passes over it making the cut). If they are in good shape, run them. If a bunch of them are worn out, decide which to replace them with. If I ever had to give up my disc mower/conditioner, I would use a sickle machine with standard guards.
