Glad I found this forum...looks like there are a lot of knowledgeable people here. I have a 1988 JD RX75 rear-engine lawn mower with a starter that won't spin. I've taken the starter off the block, hooked it up to my car's battery with jumper cables, and it wouldn't move unless I tapped on it with a heavy wrench. It spun a few times, then stopped. Now it just sort of 'nudges' when I tap on it. Any ideas what might be wrong with the starter? I want to try to fix it myself if I can pin down the problem. I really don't want to pay the $245 John Deere wants for a new starter (I paid less than that for the mower) and I haven't seen any cheaper ones for my model anywhere else. THANKS.
