Aaron,
Youre going to read ground through the starter wire if the brushes are touching the armature.That's normal, If it won't turn now when you hook juice to it you have a dead short. If that's the case pull it back apart and look at the pos brush lead and make sure it isn't touching the case, or the spring for it is'nt touching the case or one of the thru-bolts.
