Good evening gentlemen, and ladies,

Someone recently put a handful or so of play sand in my gas tank. I found it in the fuel filter, then I removed and cleaned the fuel filter, gas tank, and fuel line. Put it back together, put gas in it and it ran as well as it usually does. However, now, about 3 days later, I run it for a while until it gets good and hot, then it begins to backfire and die. The first time this happened I changed the oil, which it needed anyway, also cleaned the air intakes. The next day, today, it runs for a while until hot, then backfires and dies. It would restart and run for a short time, then die again, repeatedly. NOW it won't start. It started and ran the last time but at a VERY slow pace, then when it quit it wouldn't start again as I just said.

I cleaned the spark plugs, two of which were clotted with oily junk, two of which had light white deposits on them. I'll replace these as soon as possible. Also changed the air cleaner oil. Still no luck.

Background on this tractor: last summer I had the distributor weights replaced, cause it wouldn't run. then it would run, but has been underpowered since. The flywheel marks are worn away, but I moved the distributor back and forth so that it would pull at least some load, but right now it's like 18-20 hp instead of 50. That is, if it would start, right now. Should I lift the distributor out and rotate it before reinsertion? How do I do that? thank you so much in advance for any ideas.
