thanks diesel and ray. It is in fact sugar. I tasted the little bag of particles I saved, and sure enough... I didn't clean the carburetor yet, but I will immediately.

Re the timing, diesel, if it's one tooth slow on timing, does that mean I need to remove the distributor, rotate it, then reinsert it? I didn't have to turn the distributor all the way in one direction to get the power I have, but rather I moved it up to and slightly past it's current adjustment, then back, to maximize power. thanks, Andy
