How do emails get overseas ???

Just wondering about how emails travel. I've got internet and email hookup over my phoneline and others have it on various kinds of cable. I assume that it keeps moving that way throughout North America, is that right? But how do the messages move across the oceans? I think I remember something about huge undersea cables ... does that make sense? Or are messages transferred via satellites or something like that? I guess it would be like phone calls overseas but even that I'm unsure of these days what with all the new technology.
