I used to work with ATT Transoceanic, they lay and maintain undersea cables. Almost all of overseas telephone/data/internet traffic now flows thru undersea fiber optic cables. Satellites are not often used now a days for the afore mentioned types of communications. The military uses satellites for field communications and some remote areas also use them, but that is about it.
