changing tire

I need to change the outside tire on my JD 5020. The tire size is 18.4 X 38. I would like to attempt this my self. I was told this is done with the tire still on the tractor. How is the tire busted loose from the rim while tire is still attached to the tractor, and standing up? Does any out there change their own large tires?
