Why didn't many old tractors have front bumpers or grille guards ???

It seems that some of the N-series Fords had some sort of front bumper or grille guard. Other than those I can't remember seeing any of the old stuff that had bumpers or guards on the front. When you see how many grilles and radiators were bashed in it's suprising that more tractors didn't have them. Especially if a guy was letting his wife drive the tractor. Do you think it was just a cost thing?
