Why so many oil filters

The dealer where I bought my car gives free oil changes for as long as you own it. You have to pay for the filter unless you bring your own. I took my car in for my free oil change and when I picked it up they charged me for the filter. Said the one I supplied was the wrong one. I paid up and left. The next day I checked the filters and it turns out the one I supplied was the right one and the dealer installed to wrong filter! There is quite a difference in the size and diameter of the two filters and was surprised that the "wrong" filters was not leaking. When I called the service dept. they said (big surprise) that it didn't matter what filter was used. Now I know the dealership is gonna say anything to deny any fault, but it got me to thinking. Why are there so many different oil filters when most of them are physically interchangeable?? Is the oil pump rate, flow rate, oil pressure, etc so critical that there is really a need for 50 or 60 different filters?? Also, what is the negative effect of using the wrong filter, especially if it was physically the same size and look in all outward appearances ?? Sorry if this is a little off topic, but I suppose it could just as well apply to tractors. Thanks
