Because a filter may fit & be incorrect for the "old tractor". The wrong filter may have the same thread pitch but the slightly smaller metric diameter. Not a good thing if the filter blows off. Different filters have various pressures at where internal bypass valves allow dirty oil around the filter media. Some filters do not have an internal bypass valve. Some flters have an anti drainback valve & other applications do not require the check valve. So multiply three different levels of filtering, four different threads, drainback or not, four different bypass pressure settings, three different external diameters & three different external lengths.... equals lots of filters.
