How many of you make your own catch pens and gates? Just curious.
It seems to be a dying art around here with the advent of those catch pens on wheels. They seem like the are just super thin walled gates (like the blue "economy" bale feeders) that I would cuss all put together. What happens if the bull beats the devil out of it? Does it still work? I would think that it wouldn't stack well in that cute little cart.
I make all of my catch pens/sorting pens out of oilfield pipe and make my own gates including hangers. I usually end up with lots of gates - you can never have too many as far as I am concerned. The four section catch pen at the pasture has 21 gates on it. I can't imagine paying for those if I wanted something just as stout as I built. I build it all because I am stingy and also because I can envision how it will all be used as I am putting it together. Currently I'm finishing a 29x40 addition to a catch pen. It will end up with 9 gates unless I decide I need more spur of the moment.
I did see a sorting pen the other day made from three metal highway divider rails. It looked indestructible but you would need a torch to make every cut. With the pipe at least I can use the chop saw.
