Normally, pay is NOT discussed in a job interview. And the applicant should never bring up pay or benefits during the interview. Nor should the applicant comment on salary if it's brought up by the interviewer, unless the interviewer directly asks the applicant. Once the interview is completed, either on the spot or some time afterwards, the prospective employer will make an offer. That's when the applicant can accept, reject, or make a counteroffer to the salary.
Salary is ALWAYS negotiable. But the job interview is not the time to negotiate.
