Living up here has often had me wondering about a few things relating to the older tractors: 1. I see countless numbers of old tractors with the block broken out by freezing temperatures. Why didn't farmers in those days use anti-freeze? Was it that expensive or unavailable or what? What with engines being around for quite a while (even back then) you'd think it wouldn't have happened as much as it did. 2. On older tractors, say from the 40's and 50's, what alternatives exist for tranny oil instead of say 80W90 etc. Can a guy use ATF in the winter, or maybe the newer dual-purpose gear/hydraulic fluids without getting into trouble? Looking forward to hearing your opinions.
