Hi Mike, I'm also from Alberta, and know about froxen blocks. One reason was anti-freeze of any kind was not available or very expensive. Another thing is that some of those tractors did not have a pressurized cooling system and would lose alot of coolant to evaporization working all day. I know some people used all sorts of weird things as coolant. Whatever worked for them at the time. Have a good day all, Dave
