Jon gave you are great answer to question #1. Boy, does that bring back (bad) memories! I use Mobil 1 synthetic gear 75W-90 lube in my 1968 model tractor's transmission. Yes, it's pricey but I can start it at -30, immediately put it in gear, and work it just like I do when it's +100. BTW, ATF can never be substituted for gear oil in any unit that was designed to use gear oil.
