1. In many cases it was probably because owners wouldn't spend the money for proper antifreeze nor drain the block in time. I grew up in the middle of Wisconsin in the 50's and can recall that blocks cracking was something of a problem if not that common. 2. Like somebody else said, Mobil synthetic gear lube would probably seem pretty cheap once you used it. ATF is not meant for gear lube. When we lived outside of Duluth I got so I would start our MH50 and let it idle for about 15 minutes when it was seriously cold out before trying to plow snow. The mineral based 80W-90 was sort of fluid by then and the hydraulics would work. When I started and then idled our F100 with the truck 4 speed, the tranny would howl and clunk for a couple minutes until enough of the 80W-90 sort of liquified and began acting like a lubricant. This was at about -15 F in the heat of the day.
