I lost an engine to multiweight oils. I now never use them in anything. The lighter oils in 10-30 are there to thin the oil when the engine is cold, making the starter motors work easier. I think that a little starter wear is better than an oil that gets too thin at normal engine operating temperatures. If you want to use a multiweight then I would advise to note your oil pressure when then engine is hot for your present 30 weight - then again when you use a multigrade. You might find that the multigrade has a lower presure when hot. It only takes a fraction of a second of low oil presure for the crank and rod bearing to say good bye. As for me - if the engine has some wear on it - I run 40 weight in the summer and 30 in the winter. Cheaper to keep a good battery or replace the starter than the engine.
