I assume that you are talking the PTO stub shaft that you would attach a machine to and not the PTO drive shaft that trnsmits power from the engine to the rear of the tractor and in turn drives the stub shaft. If so, there will be no reason to split the tractor. The entire PTO housing can be removed from the rear of the tractor,and the long drive shaft that runs from the PTO, thru the transmission to the bell housing will come out with the housing. This will allow you to replace the stub shaft. Be very careful when re-inserting the drive shaft as there is a seal that can be easily damaged. You may want to remove the top cover of the rear end so as to guide the long shaft properly. Go to the Case IH web site for parts for an exploded view of the PTO set up. Also, spending $ 20 on a shop manual would be a good investment. Good luck.
