430 case pto shaft

I snapped the pto shaft in half on my 1967 case 430. I have a new on to install, but am wondering how difficult it will be to do. The new shaft has a threaded end on it. I assume the threads hold on a gear that run of of some sort of planatary set up. My questions is can the new shaft be installed without splitting the tractor in half? Andy advice will be appreciated.

I assume that you are talking the PTO stub shaft that you would attach a machine to and not the PTO drive shaft that trnsmits power from the engine to the rear of the tractor and in turn drives the stub shaft. If so, there will be no reason to split the tractor. The entire PTO housing can be removed from the rear of the tractor, and the long drive shaft that runs from the PTO, thru the transmission to the bell housing will come out with the housing. This will allow you to replace the stub shaft. Be very careful when re-inserting the drive shaft as there is a seal that can be easily damaged. You may want to remove the top cover of the rear end so as to guide the long shaft properly. Go to the Case IH web site for parts for an exploded view of the PTO set up. Also, spending $ 20 on a shop manual would be a good investment. Good luck.

Thanks for the help. I have the manual that came with the tractor, but have misplaced it. I suppose I should buy one ot the IT maunuals. Yes it was the stub shaft. I loaned my brushog to a neighbor and I guess he got tired of breaking the shear bolt off so he put a grade 8 bolt in the shear bolts place. I discovered this after I broke the stub shaft. Thanks again

By all means, buy the I.T.&T shop manual...the owner's manual will be of little help in repairing anything. You will likely need a new gasket for between the PTO housing and the rear end and also a new one for the top of the rear end IF you remove the lid...both available from Case. If you have the lid off the rear end, I would certainly replace the seal that the PTO drive shaft from the engine runs through located between the rear end housing and the transmission...it will never be easier to do and failure of that seal results in fluid from the transmission migrating to the rear end.

Go to case forum and ask the guys there .. did a similar repair a while back it was the throw out lever was jammed over center , cant recall if all was repairable from the back seems like i took 4 sp tranny cover off,, or maybe it was the seat and hydro lift off as well ,, talk with the Case guys
